Produced and written in-house by Bethany staff, The Situation Room is a LIVE production that follows the story of a family as they all come face to face with eternity. Even seemingly small decisions can bring drastic change.
The Situation Room follows the story of the Richards. They are a typical family that is about to be faced with a lifetime of decisions and situations. Michael & Chloe have been married for 17 years and have three kids, Kingston, Olivia, and Jayden. When they met, Chloe was given a job opportunity that she could not pass up. She and Michael decided to chase after their careers and wait to start a family, but Chloe became pregnant, unbeknownst to him. Chloe decided to have an abortion and pass it off as a miscarriage. They later had three kids but stayed distant from Michael’s mother, Evelyn.
Michael has always been content. He graduated college to be a teacher at much protest from Evelyn, his mother. However, the moment Michael became a father, his life changed. He re-focused his life, and became driven to give his kids the life he didn't have growing up. Things have been distant between Chloe and Michael over the years, but his concept of his wife is challenged as a huge secret comes out.
Evelyn is considered the “saint” of the family. She is your typical southern roots grandmother. Evelyn has two children and has been a staple in her community for years. Her relationship with Michael is strained. Always feeling like Chloe took her son and grandkids away from her, she has always held anger and resentment towards both Chloe & Michael for years. Things begin to reach a tipping point as years of frustrations come to the surface and ultimatums are made.
While Kingston, the oldest grandson, has been having problems adjusting to the move, Evelyn has been sowing seeds of discord between her grandson and his parents. Kingston is trying to find his place. At 18 years old, he is now an adult looking for his next season in life, but family issues continue to draw his focus as he is forced to choose sides.
Things take a dramatic turn when their lives are faced with eternity after a car accident takes the lives of the entire family. They soon realize that even the smallest decisions in their lives have enormous repercussions for their futures. One by one, they must account for who they are while facing the eternal consequences of their decisions.
Michael is the father of Kingston, Olivia, and AJ. He has been an 11th grade math teacher for the past 15 years. He grew up in a loving family, but has always been one step behind his mother’s acceptance. God has been a consistent afterthought in his life until he became a father. He had opportunities to make different life choices but had a passion to teach. His mother, Evelyn, worked tirelessly to see him succeed in life and be financially well off. This was never a passion of his, as Michael always wanted to help people in some way. When he met Chloe, he fell in love with her passion and drive, but Evelyn resented Chloe for being a champion of Michael’s career choice. This has caused an unsettling relationship between the trio, especially now as Michael and his family have moved back home to be closer to family.
Chloe is the mother of Kingston, Olivia, and AJ. She is a very successful business woman who is a sales rep for a large pharmaceutical company. She grew up in a Christian home, but has slowly drifted away from knowing Christ. When she and Michael were dating, she became pregnant. Simultaneously, she was offered a massive opportunity with her job. She decided to have an abortion, feeling that starting a family at that time would have ruined her future career. Michael, unaware of how she lost the baby, later proposed and they became married. Chloe feels guilt and anxiety about her past decisions and has always feared the truth coming out. Chloe has always stood her ground with Evelyn, something no one else in the family has ever done. She recently had a moment where she prayed to Jesus after hearing Kingston pray to God on her behalf.
Known as Grandma Evelyn to everyone, Mrs. Richard is the matriarch of the family and the center of every choice made. As a result of being left at the altar, Evelyn lives her life grasping to stay in control, trusting no one but herself. She is involved with both her church and community and takes pride in the fact that they “couldn’t do it without her”, causing her to continue to feed her pride and false dependence on Jesus. After losing her husband, she is displeased with her son's choice of job and type of wife.
A typical teenager, Kingston is the son of Michael and Chloe. He is fun and energetic but also complex. He knows that something big has happened with his Mom, but his parents aren't communicating to him about what’s going on. He tends to be closer to Michael. He started becoming more involved with his church and decided a year ago to completely follow Jesus. His life has transformed. He has a heart for his cousins who are far away from God. He wants to see them meet Jesus.
Filled with energy for days, you can’t get much past Olivia. She is in everyone's business and knows all the details of the drama in her family. She knows her family is connected to church, but doesnt have a relationship with God in any way. She loves volleyball and would love to get a degree in sports medicine whenever she gets to college. Her faith and confidence is about to be tested in a big way.
The devil, the one that is fighting for God’s creation to be separated from Him.
Filled with a frustrated life, Jayden has had some rough cards dealt to him. After losing his mother at birth, Jayden’s father blames him and has resorted to alcohol and physical abuse. He is walking a tightrope at school, staying out of his father’s way, and contemplating a solution to his problems at home. He is filled with so much anger, it pours out onto his younger cousins. Kingston asks him an important question, but his decision has ramifications he is not prepared for.
